Fat Loss Case-study: Pearl

Updated: Jul 2

Here is the exact strategy we took with her to lose 19kg in the past one year.

Pearl came to me at an all-time high of 120kg.

She had a singular goal- to lose 10kg in 3 months.

I tried almost everything before- Herbalife, Intermittent Fasting, No Carbs, Keto, even slimming centre

Tired and frustrated with all the other gimmicks and approaches she had tried in the past, she was ready to give online coaching a shot.

Now, I want full disclosure here.

She’s not perfect, her journey has NOT been linear.

In fact, after one month of her weight not budging.

And she wanted to quit.

Yikes.

Here’s where I swoop in and say, it wasn’t all her fault.

I was to blame too.

At that point in time in my business, I was offering Training/ Nutrition/ Training + Nutrition coaching.

Big mistake.

Especially giving people who struggle with Nutrition the most, and need the most help there, that choice.

Well, that’s a post for another time…

So after one month of diligent training— 3x a week, yes there was body composition changes- she was gaining muscle and losing fat, but the results were far slower than I’d like.

I expected some more movement in the scale for her.

A realistic rate of fat loss would be anywhere between 0.5-1% bodyweight per week, so at her weight, she should have expected to lose anywhere from 0.6-1.2kg per week at least.

But like I mentioned, her weight was stagnant and she was becoming unmotivated because of it.

So, I told her we needed to jump on a call and got her to prepare for me a one week food log to show me what she was actually eating- full transparency, zero judgement, that’s how I do things.

We got on the call, and shit got real.

She was fine with the training piece, yes she was new to it, but she had no issues working out.

It made her feel good, she was climbing up the stairs and not panting anymore, she was getting stronger— it was working.

But her nutrition was still a hot mess (if I may say that, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind).

She was eating fast food almost every other day.

Nutrients or calorie control were not words in the vocabulary of her diet, and it was my fault.

THIS was the turnaround.

I educated her that we really needed to make serious changes to her nutrition if she was ever gonna see real results.

She agreed and we began to implement the changes slowly and incrementally.

Inserting her favourite quote from Atomic Habits here,

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow”.

And as they say, all is history.

Fast forward 12 months, she is 19kg down … we hit a low of 101kg this week!

Something super cool about this transformation as well is that Pearl is a huge traveller, during the time we have worked together she has gone on cruises, long trips to Europe, and has a few more planned to Asia coming up.

I say that to say she has still managed to get results even while on holiday!

It makes me so happy to share that her mindset is no longer centred around quick fixes, instead...

She is bought into the long haul.

She is able to still enjoy meals out with her friends, while making smarter choices.

She is prioritizing nutrient dense foods and changing her taste in food.

She is consistent with training.

She is committed to personal development.

She is the queen of habits now.

She is inspiring those around her.

She is a changed person, and I am a mad proud coach.

The journey is never easy, but you are never alone.

And here is one more of my favourite quotes for you…

“The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.” -Ryan Holiday
